Remembrance Day: Lest We Forget

Tomorrow is Remembrance Day. Every year, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Canadians observe two minutes of silence to remember those who died in war. So why that specific date? It turns out the armistice of World War I was signed on 11/11/1918 at the 11th hour. In addition, the week leading up to Remembrance Day is designated as Veteran's Week. It is only fitting that we all take a moment to remember the tremendous sacrifices that these men went through in order to protect what they believed in.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

- John McCrae
